| HOWELL GOODS HELP KEEP "IRON MAN" SOARING
Howell-based ARMOR Protective Packaging starred alongside actors Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson and Gwyneth Paltrow in the blockbuster "Iron Man 2." Two of the company's products did, anyway. One of the company's blue vapor-corrosion inhibitor bags and vapor-corrosion inhibitor kraft paper are seen when Tony Stark (Downey) is assembling a new "arc reactor," which helps protect his heart from shrapnel embedded nearby the vital organ, according to Wikipedia. Vapor-corrosion inhibitors, or VCIs, prevent metal rusting. ARMOR Protective's logo is seen on VCI paper during the frantic film sequence about midway through the 124-minute film. "So you see our logo all over the paper. It covers it -- serious product placement," said Nicole Payne, ARMOR Protective's e-marketing specialist. ARMOR Protective Vice President David Yancho was contacted about six months ago by a film executive wanting to place products from the company's corrosion-management line in the film. The company's materials were not actually applied to the Iron Man suits, but helped give the appearance that Stark was conducting a very technical procedure in the film, Payne said. "They must have done their homework on storing metals for a long period of time," she said. ARMOR Protective, an international company primarily servicing the automotive industry, was founded in 1979 in Fowlerville. - Contact Daily Press & Argus reporter Christopher Behnan at (517) 548-7108 or at cbehnan@gannett.com. |
| ARMOR GETS CAMEO IN "IRON MAN 2"
Armor Protective Packaging scored a public relations coup that promises not to rust with time.
The Howell company reports this week that one of its blue poly vapor-corrosion-inhibitor bags as well as some anti-corrosion paper with the company logo made the final cut of the "Iron Man 2" film. A movie executive apparently called six months ago, requesting products that might make it on screen and the two products appear about halfway through the film. If the studio wants to save the movie as well as the Iron Man costume for posterity, it will swath them in the anti-corrosive products and call it a wrap. |

It's easy to be skeptical when testing new products. As an example, we've seen more than one liquid form of de-rusting agent enter our building; after awhile, you stop feeling like a kid on Christmas morning when a new one comes in. That changed when we tested Metal Rescue from Armor Protective Packaging.

Volatile Corrosion Inhibitors Offer Effective Protection for Processing and Shipment of Metal-Based Products
In 2002 the United States government released the results of a twoyear study on the direct costs associated with metallic corrosion in U.S. industry. Titled "Corrosion Costs and Preventive Strategies in the United States," the study-which was initiated by NACE International, mandated by the U.S. Congress in 1999, and conducted by CC Technologies Laboratories, Inc.- concluded that the total annual estimated direct cost of corrosion in the U.S. is $276 billion. At the time, that figure represented approximately 3.1% of the nation's gross domestic product!

| DEAR SHOP DOC COLUMN
Question: We're an extrusion equipment manufacturer shipping extrusion barrels reaching 10-12 feet in length. For rust prevention we have been applying cosmolines and oils using a long, makeshift broom caked with oil. The process takes a lot of manpower, workers and customers often complain about the smell of the oil, customers have to use mineral spirits to the remove the oil from the metal, and sometimes the parts still rust. Some of our equipment can be valued at as much as $100,000 per piece. Is there a better way to prevent rust? (body)
